Hello Friends,

Sorry for the late post on this topic, but we have been traveling over the holidays, and I have not been keeping up on these messages.

I have posted the story of my first Christmas trains on this group a couple of times in the past, but the train I always wanted and never got as a kid was the Gilbert American Flyer Silver Flash Alco passenger set. That A-B unit streamliner was my holy grail growing up even though my Dad had bought the Comet set early on.

I never got one “back in the day,” and never found a Gilbert version cheap enough and in good enough condition when I returned to toy trains in the 1970s, so in the mid-1990s, I bought a mint and factory sealed in the box, Lionel AF Silver Flash set at a TCA convention. Not having a permanent layout, I stored it until I “rediscovered” it over a decade later. It then made its debut on the S gauge loops at the Christmas open house at our TCA/TTOS clubhouse. Still my favorite streamliner!

Cheers!

Alan,
Not a problem.  I posted this question simultaneously on three lists, two were groups.io list and this lone YahooGroups list.
This YG list posted my question three days after the groups.io lists so I can't really chastise any slow replies given
how slow YG was in posting my original question. All but two of the lists I subscribe have left YG in the last year.
The lists on YG appear more stable the last few months, but groups.io was such a big improvement that I haven't been
paying much attention to little issues like posting messages or pics on a YG list.

Since my Christmas Train memory was about an  AF 4-4-2 set I got for Christmas over 60 years ago, I was disappointed when it didn't immediately post
on the YG list.  It was gratifying to see that others shared my early AF under the tree memories. even if delayed by the YG response.
I did eventually get a well used Santa  Fe PA/A set although now I might trade it in on an American Models set...

Probably a lot more convenient and efficient to just by one of the voltage converters for Europe.

I used to travel with one whenever I was making the Euro. trips for Oracle.

Better and cheaper now than then, from Amazon.

Lionel does not make an insulated track section in S, but they do have it in O. If you want to create an isolated section to stop train, have the station make the announcement, then automatically start the train up, (assuming you have an original AF station), you need the following: (1) 2 Lionel transition tracks (5 inches each), (2) 4 insulating pins-these go into the AF track ends that connect to the transition track.(3) an AF track lock-on fr the AF track, & (4) an AF operating button (2 wire). Also, enough AF track to finish the straight run (if needed).
You would hook up the station to the AF track, using Gilbert's instructions. In normal operation, the isolated track in front of the station receives power thru the station. When the button is pushed, the station cuts power to the track, (train stops on the isolated section) makes the announcement, turns the power back on & the train moves on.
You can also use an "air gap" instead of the insulating pins on theAF track.
The instructions of the Lionel version of the station do not mention this at all, so I don't know if it can be done. If it can't be done, shame on them!!

Ed - I thought I saw a stockyard controller (button for energizing the vibrational pad in the stock car and the rotary switch for energizing the vibrational pad in the stockyard itself) while perusing the eBay listings from Trainz.  Having said that, now I don't recall if it was black..

there was one included but the button that activates the vibrator in the car does not work. the Car is good, tested it with a couple of leads. The herd seems to move very fast but there is not adjustment nut in the back that I can see...maybe the one I have is the newer version!!!

Ed - at the risk of suggesting somethings you've already checked - it might not be the button.  First, I'd make sure the car is set up to complete the circuit - meaning that the button supplies 15 - 18 VAC to the short contact rail, which in turn contacts the slider shoe projecting from the stockcar truck.  Lastly, the metal wheels on the other truck need to be set up to ride on the rail that is ultimately connected to the base contact on the track terminal(s).  Sometimes this latter requirement gets 'lost' in a complicated track plan - especially when the stockyard is setup on a siding one or more switches away from the track terminal.  In my experience, sometimes the "one train" or "two train" slider button on the AF switch(es) is not in the right position or isn't working correctly, so the 'base' rail isn't completing the circuit...

Rich,

I have already check all those things, the car will vibrate if I touch the red wire to the yellow wire. I get not continuity between the spring post for the red wire and the yellow wire when I press the button. I attempted to open up the box but cannot figure out how to get the rotary switch cap off to explore the inside. The controller was badly corroded, looks like maybe someone used acid flux on it when trying to reattach some wires.

Subject: Transformer debate

I don’t want to START a debate here….I’d like to SETTLE one. This has been an ongoing question for a long time.

I’d like to hear from anyone who KNOWS the answers, as opposed to everyone who (like me) THINKS they know the answers.

As an example, let’s assume one is using a 30B, 300-watt single-coil transformer.

    Doug,

    I’ll give it a shot!

The dual control 18B and 30B transformers have a single transformer stack with each control having a roller wiper that comes in contact with the entire secondary winding.  So each control has access to the total output of the stack.  For the 30B, that means either side can use all 300 watts or any portion thereof.  Since the total output is 300 watts, any load on the 18V posts will reduce the amount available at the variable voltage posts.

The 350 watt pancake transformer actually has two stacks – so it is essentially two transformers in one case.  The stacks appear to be identical in size to the 175 watt pancake transformer so it makes sense that the two stacks are each 175 watts and are electrically separate.  I do not have one of these transformers so have not observed the actual wiring inside so can’t say for sure.

A dead spot on a secondary winding may be due to one or more factors –

    1.    A low spot on the winding can make the roller lose contact with that particular spot.  Look for dings in the exposed winding.

    2.    A bit of non-conductive material might be lodged over that spot.  Tape?  Dirt?  Glue?

    3.    A combination of a low spot and a slightly out-of-round roller can cause the problem.

    4.    Anything that gets in the way of proper spring force holding the roller to the winding at a particular spot.

    Waiting to hear from others!

As an example, let’s assume one is using a 30B, 300-watt single-coil transformer.

    a) Is 300w the TOTAL output, always split equally between the two sides of the transformer?

It is not split equally, the stack is common to both but each can take what is needed at any one time. So if one was was powering a 336 and it needed say 60 watts as an example and the other side was powering a modern docksider needing say 15 watts then you are pulling a total 75 watts from a common bucket load of 300 watts and have 225 watts in reserve to be available to whoever needs more.

    b) Meaning that each side is permanently limited to a maximum output of 150w ?

    No, see above

    c) Or if only one side is in use, does the other side have all 300w available?

If one side is in use say drawing 100 watts then the other side has available to it if needed the other 200 watts

    d) What effect on the two variable outputs results from items such as lights being connected to the 18v posts?

If you are pulling 50 watts for accessories then you have 250 watts available to be split between the two variables, so it could be split say 100 watts one side and 150 for the other if that is the load you wish to split between them

    e) Finally, what about the 350w “pancake” dual transformers, since these have two coils instead of just one.

You can treat these as two individual 175 watt supplies, so one would not have available more than this.

    f) One additional question….why would a coil have a dead-spot, but otherwise produce properly across the variable range?

Don’t know, perhaps the roller is slightly lifting off the stack at one small point only

    g) And can anything be done about that?

Just a funny thing I noticed about Flyer on TV/ Movies etc. HBO is running all the seasons of the Sopranos. Its the 20th anniversary of the start of the Sopranos. I used to watch it. So last night they're up to season 6. One of the main characters Bobby Bacala has a train layout in his garage. form what I remember and saw last night his layout is Lionel. Hey its set in North Jersey. Anyway Bobby is trying to engage his son to "play with the trains" and he asks Bobby Jr. if he wants t see some Moe and Joe action. They do a tight shot of a Moe and Joe lumber unloading car in action. It is the AF car but the track and the car trucks are obscured by something in the foreground like a platform around the same height of the flatcar. So Bobby had some AF. Cool. In a episode coming up I think it was in the last season of the series, Bobby gets wacked at the train store while he is holding a Blue Comet Steam engine. I must have too much time on my hands to notice that and write a email about it. Forgetaboutit.

One other thing that went through my mind was the circuit breakers. What is interesting is that the 18B, 30B and 19B (300W) transformers all share the same part number.

So if the 19B rated at 300W is correct, then for the 30B it is also technically correct but this then poses an issue as to how much could you demand from a 30B on each turret as each one has its own breaker. If you just used one side then the breaker is correct  and will trip at whatever it is set at for 300W but if you turned both turrets on and had a 300W load on each side you would be pulling a total of 600W but the breaker wouldn’t trip until it got to somewhere just above the 300W’s. So is this correct and a potential problem?

Then looking at an 18B it also has the same breaker for a 19B and 30B but is only 180W, so potentially can you pull 300W before the breaker tripped.

    More questions than answers now.

Hey guys, everyone seems to be missing the critical point.  Circuit Breakers fire on current not power.  Thus some transformers have a max voltage of 15 VAC while others have up to 18 VAC.  The same breaker adjusted correctly fires on current.  We see this on our own public layout in La Mesa California.  When we replaced the 15V AF transformer running our DCC loop, with an 18 Volt physically similar one, we suddenly found that we had more breaker firing when a train shorted even though the DCC unit limited the max current to 8 amps.  It really would make no sense to set a dual unit up with the maximum current since then the transformer would not be protected when both sides were used.  The other factor to consider is that these breakers were mass produced and may well vary from unit to unit.  Remember AC power is approximately the mean voltage times the current.  An 18 V transformer will dissipate 180 watts at 10 amperes.

      Thanks (I think), Neil.

CBs are another issue I’ve struggled with over the years.  Gilbert used so many different ones, and it’s often not clear what each was rated at. The result is that when one encounters a bad breaker, how do we determine a suitable after-market breaker that could be substituted.

Many years ago, Tom Jarcho marketed CB kits that included an appropriate self-resetting CB and an appropriate bracket to mount it.

He made these kits for several different AF transformers, with different CBs and different brackets.

Unfortunately none of the CBs were marked with their values.  I still have 2 or 3 of his kits here.

Wish he was still with us, for more reasons than one !

      Hi Raul,

And this is my point, the 19B (300W) is rated at 16V so theoretically it has a current rating of 18.75 Amps, scary, and a breaker to match its rating.

The 19B breaker is also used in the 18B which at 190W and 18V is 10.5 Amps. So on paper it would seem that you could pull way more than 10.5 Amps each side before the breaker popped.

If this same breaker is also used on the 30B then each side in theory could pull 18.75 Amps and max out just under 40 Amps for both combined, yet the stack is only designed for 18.75 Amps

Am I missing something obvious here and forgotten some basic theory?

As an example, let’s assume one is using a 30B, 300-watt single-coil transformer.

      a) Is 300w the TOTAL output, always split equally between the two sides of the transformer?

      b) Meaning that each side is permanently limited to a maximum output of 150w ?

      c) Or if only one side is in use, does the other side have all 300w available?

      d) What effect on the two variable outputs results from items such as lights being connected to the 18v posts?

      e) Finally, what about the 350w “pancake” dual transformers, since these have two coils instead of just one.

      f) One additional question….why would a coil have a dead-spot, but otherwise produce properly across the variable range?

      g) And can anything be done about that?

      Doug,

      Some things to consider:

Most of the CBs in these toy train transformers are of the bimetal type and do not trip instantaneously.  Rather, like fuses, they are designed to trip at a certain level of over-current in a particular amount of time.   A CB rated at 10 amperes for example may take 100 minutes to trip at 10 amperes, 2 minutes to trip at 15 amperes, and 2 seconds to trip at 25 amperes.  (The numbers are made up, but hopefully convey the message that there is a time component as well as a current component as to when a CB will trip.)

One can design and build electronic CBs that will have a very precise and narrow trip points, and will behave quite differently from the bimetal type.

If you have operating low voltage CBs that are unmarked, you can test them to see at what current level they will open.  You will need a transformer that will deliver enough current, some sort of load (an assortment of automotive light bulbs that you can hook in parallel will work well), a voltmeter, and a 0.1 ohm resistor (which you can make from a known length and gauge of Nichrome wire from tables found on the internet).  Put the source, in series with the load, the CB, and the 0.1 ohm resistor and put the voltmeter in parallel with the resistor.  In a series circuit, the current is everywhere the same.  Ohms law says that the voltage drop across the 0.1 ohm resistor will be 0.1 volts for each ampere of current going through it.  1 volt across the resistor will be 10 amperes, 2 volts will be twenty amperes, etc.  Just keep putting light bulbs in parallel until the CB trips.  The voltage across the 0.1 ohm resistor will tell you how much current was flowing when the CB tripped.  (If you have a clamp-on type ammeter meter that can directly measure the current, that would be is even easier to use and you wouldn’t need to make a resistor.)

      Hope this helps,

      Jerry F.

One other thing that went through my mind was the circuit breakers..

The 19B breaker is also used in the 18B which at 190W and 18V is 10.5 Amps. So on paper it would seem that you could pull way more than 10.5 Amps each side before the breaker popped.

If this same breaker is also used on the 30B then each side in theory could pull 18.75 Amps and max out just under 40 Amps for both combined, yet the stack is only designed for 18..75 Ampsneill

Am I missing something obvious here and forgotten some basic theory?

        Neil,

If each side has a separate circuit breaker, then they fire at approximately half of the total current capability.  Frankly it would make more sense to put a single breaker in the base side of the circuit but that might allow enough power to go into a shorted track to heat things up a lot on the track and the wires going to it. The breakers were put their for safety and the most likely failure is a short on the track.  You have already determined that the physical breakers are the same as on the 150 watt single control unit so that really suggests that each breaker was set to slowly open when half of the total current was used.  An average AF engine uses an amp or two.  Eight amps is sufficient to operate at least two or perhaps three engines simultaneously.  How much more power can a single controller reasonably require.

If this same breaker is also used on the 30B then each side in theory could pull 18.75 Amps and max out just under 40 Amps for both combined, yet the stack is only designed for 18..75 Ampsneill

Am I missing something obvious here and forgotten some basic theory?

Tape?  Dirt?  Glue?

        3.    A combination of a low spot and a slightly out-of-round roller can cause the problem..

        4.    Anything that gets in the way of proper spring force holding the roller to the winding at a particular spot.

        Waiting to hear from others!

I don’t want to START a debate here….I’d like to SETTLE one. This has been an ongoing question for a long time.

I’d like to hear from anyone who KNOWS the answers, as opposed to everyone who (like me) THINKS they know the answers.

As an example, let’s assume one is using a 30B, 300-watt single-coil transformer.

        a) Is 300w the TOTAL output, always split equally between the two sides of the transformer?

        b) Meaning that each side is permanently limited to a maximum output of 150w ?

        c) Or if only one side is in use, does the other side have all 300w available?

        d) What effect on the two variable outputs results from items such as lights being connected to the 18v posts?

        e) Finally, what about the 350w “pancake” dual transformers, since these have two coils instead of just one.

        f) One additional question….why would a coil have a dead-spot, but otherwise produce properly across the variable range?

        g) And can anything be done about that?

Can someone who KNOWS the answers please settle this with a firm explanation?

We are kind of going around in circles.  The best way to test things is to measure the trigger current for the breaker that was suggested in one of the previous entries.  I am only giving you an engineering answer that makes sense to me professionally.  If I was designing a toy for children to use, what protections would I choose.  What is actually there reflects the standards of the fifties and sixties.  I know that most of the transformers I have measured both in my collection and on our club layout fail somewhere between 8 and 10 amps and depend somewhat on how long the current is on.  They are thermal breakers so that they are not real exact on the opening currents.  If you could borrow a clamp on AC ammeter from somewhere, this is an easy thing to do.  I think there isn’t a right or wrong answer here but simply a question of exactly which breakers were used and if they can be adjusted to set points.  I still would argue for protecting each half of a dual controller with individual breakers, each set for half power.

          Raulf,

In looking at the schematic of one of the dual controller units, the Gilbert engineers did indeed place an individual breaker on the common line of each transformer.  Unfortunately, they did not specify a value for either of the breakers.

For the smaller transformers, AF had an accessory circuit breaker (American Flyer #13).  The breaker itself was made by Klixon and certainly is a thermal breaker.  See:

          https://www.ebay.com/itm/CWF-Here-Your-Listing-for-Your-American-Flyer-No-23780-Platform-/311943018280

As you said, a clamp-amp would probably be the best way of determining the time-to-trip curve for the breakers used in the larger transformers.

Is the password a Trainminder password or a Windows one?  If you never had a password for this program before it seems strange that the program would ask for one now.  You might even try to open it by leaving the password field blank if you haven’t tried that yet.

Also if you can open the program, you might consider converting or exporting the file to a general data file that could be moved to another database program, such as a CVS file (I think that’s the format, although I haven’t used a Windows program in many years).  That type of data file might be usable in another, perhaps new program, that could import it.  I’m sure there are other techie persons in this group who can advise you better than me.

Exporting is a nice idea, but the program has no such facility. What I did was to print out a report and manually edit that into a CSV file that I could import into Excel. Painful and time consuming but it’s the only way to do it.

My alternative would be to take one of the drumheads offered as replacements for the drumheads in the streamlined observation cars (e.g. 663 or 963) and try to fashion a short cylinder out of brass tubing (or similar material) to which the drumhead could be glued and then find a small surface mount LED for lighting.  If anyone has any experience with 'rolling your own' I'd be interested in finding out what you did.

hook go into hole on the frame at the front - up from the bottom or
down from the top (see photos). It appears to work best with the hook
coming up from the bottom into the hole in the front frame. Also, do
I have the string attached (positioned) correctly to the front bar on
the log tray (see same photos).

Also any comments for the type of string to use - the replacement
cord I used appears to stretch.

Thanks for any comments and help.

Bob - thanks for reminding me about Tomar - I think I may have stumbled upon that site a couple of years ago when I first started thinking about this.  I can't quite tell what the state of their business is, based on a quick look at their website, but I'll give it a shot and see what happens.  They certainly do have a lot of drumheads to chose from (decisions, decisions...).

          Rich,
Glad to help.As a last resort you can take a piece of  thin clear styrene cut to shape and scratch build a frame from sheet styrene or structural shape styrene apply a decal of the drumhead (some decal sets have a decal of the drumhead for this purpose) and using white LED's light it from behind of course. I say LED's because they give off no heat that would warp or otherwise ruin your drumhead. These actually look pretty good.

Brett - I hadn't really scoped all that out - my local electronics store (Berkeley, CA) had some small SMD LEDs, but I haven't been back to pick them over and figure out what I want.  As you will see in a related reply, I'm reminded about Tomar Industries drumheads - so if that works out, I won't have to build my own...

Bob - thanks.  I'm going to see what I can get from Tomar as you suggested.  the impression I have from their website is that their drumheads are thin cylinders or, in some cases, rectangles with artwork on the drumhead itself - backlit with an LED.  The have an extensive list of actual railroad names and associated passenger train names.  I'll try to get in touch with them in the next few days.

There are a number of sources for LED's since Radio Shack went out of business. Actually they did not go out of business they just closed most if not all of their retail stores. You can still get items by mail order or online. Other sources are Mouser Electronics, Jameco Electronics, Archer Electronics and a few others just google LED's or electronic components. All have colored LED's in red blue green yellow and clear. Walthers has or had some bright white LED's for locomotive headlights. Accu-lites may be another source for LED's

          Rich,
Back when Tomar first came out and I was still in HO I got one of their drumhead kits for the Northern Pacific's lightweight North Coast Limited. It included an aluminum rectangular frame, the mylar with the NCL logo printed on it in color and a standard 12 volt light bulb. It looked pretty good but the light bulb got hot and warped the drumhead. LED's will be much better as they do not radiate heat plus they are brighter. Before Tomar came out with their drumhead kits Microscale Northern Pacific passenger car decal sheets had on them a decal of the drumhead. I applied the decal to a small rectangular piece of clear mylar and made my own frame for it and lit it with a standard 12 v light bulb. The light bulb got hot as you can expect and warped the drumhead.

          Hi Bob,

Just to clear up any misconceptions, LED lamps do indeed produce heat when operating.  We just do not notice the heat in toy train and many other applications because LED lamps are very much more efficient than incandescent bulbs, and more of the power used by a LED goes into making light rather than heat.

I did not know that.I just took it for granted that LED's did not produce heat cause when I would touch an LED it was cool compared to an incandescent bulb which was hot. i have actually burned my fingers on incandescent bulbs which I am sure many have done. With LED;s that is no longer a concern.

You do need a separate controller. If you connect them together, the boxcar will eject a box every time you load one into it.

I did that on my module of our train club layout, but found that the boxcar doesn't eject it with enough force to get the box onto the 770 platform; it always ends up on the ground, between the track and the 770.. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but it didn't work out. Test yours before you set it up permanently.

The car will be produced with 3 car numbers (one number '78919' is non-prototypical reflecting our July 1989-2019 anniversary). A choice of scale or hi-rail trucks & couplers will also be available.

            Hi Ed,

DO NOT under any circumstances use a knife switch for line voltage.  If you or someone else accidently touches one of the exposed connections you or they run the risk of an electric shock or even electrocution.  Knife switches are fine for fused low voltage circuits (below ~24 volts), but can be very dangerous for line voltage applications, and haven’t been used for that purpose here for many, many years.

Yes the green ground wire should be run directly to the base plate of the transformer.  The two power wires from the cord (the black HOT wire and the white NEUTRAL wire) should go to one side of a double pole, single throw (DPST) enclosed toggle switch mounted in an enclosure where the connections cannot be touched.  You can even get away with just interrupting the hot wire with a single pole, single throw (SPST) switch, but interrupting both wires is even better.  You can find the appropriate toggle switch at most hardware stores.  Tell the sales person what you want to do and they can help you find the correct switch and enclosure.

            Best of luck.

            Ed,

I normally figure to each his own but WHY would you like to switch 115VAC with an open knife switch.  It seems like an accident waiting to happen. Regardless of how you wire it, you have live high voltage on open exposed contacts.  No offence but WHY would you do this?

            Group,

I have an electrical question for the electrician on this group.

I want to use a knife switch to turn on/off power to my AF transformer. I plan on using some old computer power cords that have 3 prongs, I will be running the two power wires to one side of the knife switch and then two wire from the other side of the knife switch to the transformer. My question is can / should I run the green ground wire directly to the base plate of the transformer?

            Thanks

            ED,

Raulf makes a very strong case why you should not proceed with your idea.   The potential  for a bad results is overwhelming .
A handy box with a standard light switch and the right connectors would do the task and most importantly, be safe with nothing exposed.

Probably for 5 dollars or less.

              Ed,
Running Hot, Neutral, and Safety Ground together in a suitable power cord is the best way to go.  Risk of a shocking “accident” is greatly reduced.  Do you intend your switch will be used by yourself or by others?

I was planning for others to turn on the power to 3 separate transformers. I might give up the knife switch and just install 3 surface mount light switches .

Running Hot, Neutral, and Safety Ground together in a suitable power cord is the best way to go.  Risk of a shocking “accident” is greatly reduced.  Do you intend your switch will be used by yourself or by others?

Sorry to jump the gun regarding safety.  Yes the green wire should connect to the transformer case bypassing the switch.  Is that plastic covered knife switch rated for 115VAC?

              Good luck

              Ed,

I normally figure to each his own but WHY would you like to switch 115VAC with an open knife switch..

              Thanks

We had this discussion before when I was modifying some Flyer transformers with new cord, LED  meters and bridge rectifiers to convert
the output to DC.  I was grounding the old Flyer transformer using the three wire cords and some commented that the original was only two wire
so grounding wasn't necessary.  I felt if produced today Flyer transformers would have 3 pin cords with ground.

All the Flyer transformers I have had an off/on toggle switch.  I got rid of the OEM little buzzbox a long time ago.  What is the largest Flyer transformer
without an off/on switch?  I wouldn't bother trying to run trains with a low wattage transformer when some of the larger ones already have an off/on switch
from the factory and on-line sell for affordable prices.

Our second choice for the 2018 NASG Convention car was going to be an MTH TOFC with the short trailer.  They said OK.

Then they informed us that they had no tooling for it.

Then I inquired of Don, and that’s when he discovered the tooling was never delivered.

Then we switched to Plan 3 with MTH, which they never followed through on…..seemed to have no interest.

As time was getting short (only about a year left), we had to shift gears and go with a new Plan 4 !

And most of you know what happened with that plan !

I have 4 of the Flyonel cylindrical hoppers with scale wheels. I purchased 4 pair of 100T Barber roller bearing trucks from Jim King at Smoky Mountain Model Works. I bought these trucks because they are closer to what the prototype I model uses. That prototype railroad is the Butte Anaconda & Pacific. Does anyone have any experience swapping trucks on these and/or adding Kadee couplers? I am thinking I can just epoxy the Kadee draft gear boxes to the underframe but I am not sure if I wiil need to change truck bolsters or if I can just use the stock ones as is? I thought that if the original truck mounting screw were too large in diameter I could epoxy in a short piece of plastruct tubing to make a screw mount for the new trucks. Anybody have any ideas or suggestions?

I remember "back in the day" when a lot of guys scratch built what they needed. oine of the las was the late Jess Bennett of Careywood, Idaho. Jess had some of the most beautiful brass locomotives i have ever seen and he built them all himself using parts from S Scale Locomotive and supply. The boilers were made using brass tubing that was used for sink drains. Brass shim stock from auto parts stores was used to make boiler wrappers. Jess put a lot of hours building one particular model but the ends result was awesome. I had the good fortune of knowing Jess in the late 80's only a few years before he passed. I had numerous diagrams he made for me so as to build my own locomotives. Sadly my ex-wife tossed them out not knowing how priceless they were. Jess told me that Claude Wade who owned and started S scale Locomotive and Supply sold the business to Fred Rouse and then Claude passed away. Some time later Jess himself passed. The last I heard was that Fred Rouse sold the business but it is unknown to whom. I keep hoping that some day soon we will see S scale Locomotive and Supply resurrected. Parts could be used to convert Flyonel locomotives to scale and/or construct a totally different model from an American models locomotive.

I own a couple pair of the SMMW roller bearing trucks but have yet to find a special use for them.  I also own Ace, SHS, and AM roller bearing trucks; each is slightly different from the others, including truck bolster height, so some tinkering is often necessary.
Ordinarily, there would be no reason not to use the Lionel trucks, replacing the bolsters and adjusting the wheel gage, but as you say the SMMW are closer
to your prototype, that is understandable.
One caveat: I am not sure why you would want to epoxy your Kadees to the car.  My experience is that is a bad idea, as it will prevent your removing them
for service (are you CERTAIN you'll never break a knuckle?  Or want to tinker with different springs?).  Epoxy is not always a permanent fix, either.  I strongly recommend tapping the holes in the car floor 0-80 (in preference to the coarse thread ones included with Kadees).  Much easier to detach if needed, and
I can't imagine machine screws coming out of tapped holes in any kind of service.  Whether you will want a spacer for them will depend on how your
SMMW trucks put the coupler height--sometimes it is easier to play with that than raising the car with washers between bolsters.
As I recall with my AF/Lionel covered hoppers, the truck kingpins are a self-tapping metric screw (probably for faster unit assembly in the PRC), so I retapped them for 2-56.  Unhappily, there is not a lot of depth in the car floor to hold them (just barely enough, I found), and you will not want to drill and tap deeper, as the bolsters are located right under the car end and would be very visible.

Roy's "another S guy" may have been me... as I once tried to get everyone on the train so Don could justify producing a Evans Rack accessory to go on their GSC flat car.  But trying to wrangle the S community to support that project proved to be a pointless and wasted effort.

I do, however, still have most of the material I came up with pertaining to that project... I even found the copyright concept drawings for the prototype car, which turned out to be a one-shot, experimental auto rack built on a NYC GATC flat car (VERY similar to the GSC flat).  (see attached pics)

I thought I still had the dimensional drawings for the sides of the Evans rack... but I can't seem to find them now.

Yep, you were the other S guy. The originals from the 1950’s were a mere 60’ long, shorter than the old AF passenger cars, so I know they would negotiate 20” radius Flyer track.

We also did another quick take of his fabulous layout and locomotives that same day. Going to put it and some other stuff in "S-Gauge model Railroading" volume Vlll some day. As I think I tried to suggest, perhaps at such length as to become obscure, that would depend on which truck one uses, as they have differing bolster
heights.  Using Ben Trousdale's replacement truck bolsters with the original trucks does indeed allow attaching the Kadees directly to the car floor.
I don't know about other roller bearing trucks, as I hadn't tried them.

He already has a shell like this, but it has been damaged, so he wants his replacement shell painted.  Can anyone recommend someone who can do such a task?  It should not be a difficult paint job .  He is in PA, but it does not need to be someone near him.  ALL recommendations would be accepted and appreciated!

I'm not volunteering, but to do the job right, the tender should be done at the same time to match the locomotive.  There are as many shades of Brunswick Green as there are people in S gauge!  I've also done a couple of these K5s, but I don't have that kind of time any more.

Not just Brunswick Green but every color on the spectrum. I remember back in about 71, just after Burlington Northern was formed from the merger, seeing a BN freight with 5 freshly painted locomotives, each must have been painted in a different shop, all having different shades of Cascades Green. I agree that the locomotive and tender should be painted at the same time. I too am bnot able to do the painting anymore that's why i will have Mike Baker at TMB Custom Models will do my painting

Concept Models (http://www.con-sys.com/), Stockton, CA, seems to have discontinued their S line of kits.

A recent offering on ebay by seller 'coach_class' included the following text in the Item Description block:
               "Mfgr: Concept Models
Our company has dropped S Scale manufacturing. We are selling off some of the models created for advertising but have never been sold.....or advertised. This is a one-of-a-kind offering.
              "

The item offered as a buy now sale was an assembled and painted advertising specimen of a Schnabel Car and Load kit in S, CPOX 820 with transformer load, without trucks.  I bought it.  A check of the Concept Models web site found it is being scrubbed of S content.  A few S buttons were still present but resulted in the annoying 404 message.  They are continuing their HO kit business.

I realize the number of S modelers is not huge.  Of those, the number of kit builders is smaller.  Of the kit builders, the number of repeat customers to a kit manufacturer is smaller yet.  I thank them giving S an honest try.  I have their IAPX 1028-37, 17300 gallon liquid Argon, Cryogenic Tank Car kit.  It was my first resin kit project.  I enjoyed building it.

A few days ago I had to make a trip to the VA medical Center at Fort Harrison, Montana about 4 hours east and slightly south of Kalispell. I usually take the DAV van so as to relax on the trip most of which is on secondary roads and there are no railroad tracks until you reach the small community of Avon, Montana The railroad runs between Helena, Montana and Missoula, Montana and also further east of Helena and west of Missoula. We had to stop at the grade crossing just out of Avon for an eastbound BNSF freight. The line, which is the old NP line is now MRL but BNSF has trackage rights.

Anyway, I never really paid attention to the train until we got to the town of Elliston some 10 miles east of Avon. The BNSF freight took the siding and as we passed we had to slow while going through Elliston. I looked at the wheels on the freight cars and the wheels that were  being delivered and were on a flatcar and realized I been doing them wrong for years. The facing side of the wheels on the flatcar were rusty as you would expect from being in the elements but the wheels on the cars that were in use were not rusty. I would imagine that the back sides and axles were rusty but the wheel faces were, for a better description, grimy black. Oil and grease from the bearings was being flung on those wheels thus preventing rust. I would imagine locomotive wheels to be "grimy black" as well but I would also think the backs of locomotive wheels to also be "grimy black" due to the traction motors and lubrication of the gears. On our models it probably won't matter that much cause on the prototype you can't really tell unless you crawl under one when it is in the service bay. I'll pass on the chore. Ya learn something new every day.

              Hi guys

I’m looking for a Baldwin engine with a non-working motor.  I have a new project that I’m working on

and will be converting it over to dc then to dcc. I don’t need the shell, just the powered truck.

you can contact me off line at johntech at bex dot net

Wish I could report better, but with only a week left for advance orders, I haven’t had a single order for one.

In fact, only two reservations for ANY of the new engines announced.

<< While I really like the SD70ACe and ES44AC locos that Lionel has released, like Rich my stable of those is getting a bit large. But I really like the UP Spirit of the Union Pacific SD70ACe they have announced. A great loco with a message of support for our troops, it would make a great runner at shows and other exhibitions. And with the paint scheme being very new (2017), it may be one that has been seen..

We (the Southeastern Michigan S Gaugers) got back home this Sunday evening from a weekend running our layout at the World’s Greatest Hobby show in Novi (Detroit suburb) Michigan.. I talked to a representative of Lionel who remind me that even though something you might like is in the new catalog, it is not guaranteed to be made. If they don’t get enough reservations for any item by Fri 8 March, it will go the way of Lionel’s highly advertised SD 40-2 . (That means we’ll never see it.)  I found certain items in that catalog that I’d like to have, and I have so informed my favourite retailer who, I trust, is placing his orders with Lionel.

I also talked to someone at the Mike’s Train House booth. They have some plans for future S gauge products, though nothing that they didn’t get from SHS. He mentioned an NW2. They have developed a circuit board for their O gauge 44-tonner which will also fit in the S gauge switcher. He mentioned other items I don’t recall now, but I’m sure the deal will be the same as with Lionel. When they put out the announcement, enough of us have to place our orders, or the items won’t get made.

I have a problem with my mail car, when it runs through a 720A switch it's arm is activating, the train enters the turnout from the frog end (switch set to through direction) the mail car arm activates when the pickup wheels contact the rails of the switch (just for a brief second but long enough to throw out the pouch it just picked up). runs through the same switch in the diverging route with no problems. what's strange is, if I remove the car and replace it sometimes it will go through the switch without activating the arm one or two times

It's possible that the bearing journals on the truck with the arm are worn enough to have the side frame contact a rail...  Difficult to say for sure.  Check the position of the metal wheels too.  Going one way makes it work and the other way, not.  Keep "base" and variable rails in their proper position.  Also, the car will not operate in both directions, only in the one where the mail post is wired correctly.

I could be wrong.  My wife usually tell me so.

During this now-dormant discussion a short time back, I mentioned having once done a drawings of the side panels of the Evans Rack I was going to try to build to represent the NYC's one-shot Evans Auto Carrier car.  At that time I could not find that old drawing... but it just happened to rear it's ugly head today, so here it is.

Bask ye all in the glory!!!... <ahem> see attachment.

This side panel was designed to fit on the SHS GSC flat car.  I never got around to drawing the design for the top deck (which was essentially NOT a "deck" proper, but rather some sort of steel grid with car tire 'tracks' (ramps) attached, but I had/have a general idea for how it should have and probably looked.

To make a long story as short as possible...

My next-door neighbor's 8 year old grandson has been living with them for the past month while his dad has been going through some out-of-town medical cars due to injuries.  Luckily, the parents live near us so the child didn't have to change schools.  But the little guy has taken a fancy to my train collection beyond even what my own children have... so I'd like to put together a small collection of AF trains for him.  I already had about 7 or 8 freight cars that I bought for my children that they rarely play with, so I'm putting those in the package.  Those cars all had the Pikemaster trucks and couplers.  None of them had the knuckle couplers or the old hook type couplers.  I am also throwing in two motorless steam locos that I think I got from Doug at Port Lines a few years back for use as push (on the track) trains, but I'd like to also include a powered/operating loco of some sort.. steam or diesel... doesn't matter... but one of each would be nice.  If anyone out there has any spare, good condition AF cars you'd be willing to donate or sell at a really good (cheap) price to help with this effort, I'd like to hear from you.  I could also use some track and a power pack (transformer).  Loose stuff is fine.... no boxes needed... just no broken and/or worn out stuff please.  I bought the caboose in the attached photo for the package... this is the kind of stuff I'm looking for.

                  Thanks.

Answering all the questions to date.

Our car is being made for us by American Models, and is based on their current 3-bay covered hopper.  Up to April 1st, the cost of the car is $69.95, after that the price goes up to $79.75  Details of the car and price/shipping costs can be found on the announcement flyer here:   https://southjerseysgaugers.org/Projects/DupontCarOrderForm.pdf

                    Attachments :

Based on the comments of people here in the group, I have been putting together an NYC 6-car autorack.  Please see the attached photograph of the prototype, and the image of my rendition. It is based on patent drawings.  I have shown in the drawing a flat car.  It was not my intent to create a flat car, but can if the interest is high enough.  The flat car used is an SHS 53’ flat car.

The idea is to put together a kit of the autoloader, which would be easy to print as all flat shapes for the most part.  The question is – do I create a flat car for the autorack to sit upon?  Again, it would be based on prototype.

                      Thanks

                      Group,

The 499 GE Electric is the only non-steam loco that I have owned, I have a question about how to activate the horn, do I need a AF 708 horn generator to make it work?

                      Thanks

I only want the un-built KITS in their original boxes... not pre-assembled models.

I already have the other two kits in this series (354.1 and 354.4), so I don't need either of those.

Makes sense, and the thought did cross my mind. But I’d never received it before, so I gave it a little “space”.

Besides, I didn’t put it past the Amherst Show folks to actually do it.

I get these all the time.  Mostly from conferences and other things that I have attended for work.  It is bogus and probably most have never attended the show/conference or exhibition.  The have a list, or maybe not, and trying to get you to part with money to create a marketing campaign using their list of names.

However, one conference I attended had approximately300 attendees, and maybe 10 exhibitors.  They tried to sell me a list of 5000 people that attended this event.  It is ascam and completely bogus..

Living out on the west coast, I am not familiar with this show, but it is the information of the attendees, not the exhibitors they are giving out.   That is a lot of information that they list and I wonder how they collect it from an attendee.  Maybe this is not a "pay your money and walk in" type of show.  I would bet it is included in a "registration form."  Maybe they have a prize drawing for which they say they want this information.  Perhaps that is the inducement to get the information.  Again, probably no privacy policy stated or they may even say that the information "may be used by us and our 'associated companies."

A lot of what is legal can still be reprehensible.  I was always told that you need to watch out for lawyers who keep the Canons of Ethics on their desks.   It is not that they are the most ethical, but rather they need to keep the book handy to see how close they can come to the line.
