Hi all and Happy new year! Hope it's a good one for all of us!

I have a high rail lay out with 32 turnouts and some are very sluggish and some work only very intermittently. Is there a good book/pamflet that gives suggestions for getting these older AF switches to work smoothly again?

And what is the optimal voltage for them to run at? I currently have two transformer hooked to them but all the bulbs run the voltage down to 11 or 12 volts before the switches are even engaged! Any body know how many amps a single switch draws when engaged?

Thanks for the help!

Hello,   We’re near Downingtown.  I’m a retired electrical engineer and enjoy repairing all electrical and mechanical apparatus.  This is a good skill to anyone delving into these old toys.  This initial 2 train layout is for the grandkids, but I hope to expand it in the near future.  I’m looking for any original AC Gilbert and American Flyer pieces, preferably those that are in poor but restorable condition.  If you come across any that have failed or need attention, please let me know.

Happy New Year,

Where in SE PA?  I am in Collegeville.  I have a set of similar era trains.  I got the trains when I was 4 or so.  I remember seeing the trains running on a hardwood floor in south St. Louis.

We had a modest layout in our basement in St. Louis.  My father would spend time wiring the layout.  My brother, who was two years younger than I, when a toddler (couldn’t be more than 4), decided to help my father and cut all the wires.  The layout was put away after that.  For the most part, it has spent its time in boxes.  Most are still in the original boxes or locomotive wrap.

The collection has grown.  Most of the switches need to be rebuilt or rewound, as my brother and I burned out the solenoids.  Many of the switch boxes are also broken, with the copper strips having failed at a rivet.  We used momentary contact switches to throw the remaining switches, or would use the semaphore to trigger the switches.   About 15-20 years ago my brother and I set them up on a ping-pong table and got all the accessories to work – including signaling.  It has been packed away in plastic boxes since then. While cleaning out my father’s house before it was sold and torn down to new money wanting to build a 8000 sq ft monument to his wealth, I was able to retrieve the trains from the attic.   I am trying to find the time to clear out the basement and build a layout.

I have an "under the bench" box of switches, controllers, and track that I would like to sell at a bargain price. Also lots and lots of steam loco chassis. Some with wheels and some without. Lots of car and caboose chassis. Also a plethora of reverse units. And lots more. Time for some house cleaning.

Jin in CT,
The solenoids in your 720 and 720A switches are shouting for help.  These switches are about the same age as this retiree.  The diminished voltage is likely caused by stuck mechanisms more than the bulbs.  The switches have two solenoids to select the through and diverted positions; one for each.  Each switch need to have the bottom plate removed and the mechanism throughly cleaned.  Remove all rust and crud.  Additionally, unless you have been the sole owner of your switches, there is a likelihood they were abused by someone putting “stuff” on the remote control lever resulting in cooked insulation in the solenoids.  If damaged varnish in the solenoids turns out to be the case, they will need rewinding with new magnet wire.  Be very cautious in selecting and applying any (optional) lubricant; Oil-based will attract dust and develop more crud.  Graphite is conductive and may cause short circuits.  If this becomes more than you want to tackle, there are good mechanics on this group.  Just ask for help.  I am not available to repair other people’s equipment—grandkids and elder care are my priorities.

Frank (& others),

I have an almost unlimited supply of original AF track, manual and remote turnouts, accessories, and probably at least 200 AF engines-----all in As-Is condition that I will NEVER have enough time to service and put into running condition.  NONE of my as-is condition equipment is listed on the website, so inquire if interested in anything specific…….I probably have it !

While cleaning out my father’s house before it was sold and torn down to new money wanting to build a 8000 sq ft monument to his wealth, I was able to retrieve the trains from the attic.   I am trying to find the time to clear out the basement and build a layout.

Hello, I'm and live with my wife in SE PA. For the first time in 60 yrs, I set up my 1951 A.F. trains, this time for the grandchildren.  We are having a blast. We've had a number of problems, most due to lack of lubrication and other basic problems.  I look forward to any guidance the members might be able to offer.  I apologize in advance that my questions are going to be very basic,

Happy New Year

You need more power. I like the Lionel KW 190watt for accessories, which produces up to 20volts.
Also I use the big 350watt ACG for accessories. You can also light the bulbs separately off your accessory main line to remove that load.

First, I agree with the reply posts about getting the mechanisms in your solenoid freed up and properly re-lubricated.  I would also suggest a with-dedicated transformer.  I have a 100 watt 8B that is wired only to operate my switches.  The switch lights are on one of my illumination circuits hooked to a different, larger transformer.  The switch-operating transformer doesn't have to be too large since it's only operating one or two switches at any one time

All,
I've only worked with a handful of the bigger Flyer transformers.  AS a group, how close were they to their rated
voltages?  The reason I've been asking is that when I converted to DC I decided to only use the Flyer
variable transformers that were 5-18 volts; rectified I should have about 2- 15 volts DC.  Most of the Flyer
transformers had a smaller control range and lower top end voltage, typically 7-15 volts.  Now I'm wondering if
Flyer tested their transformers and the design/build variables forced Flyer to test the outputs and then
they separated the transformers into one of these two ranges after testing.

If the 19B had a 5-18 voltage range, it would be excellent for conversion to a DC power supply.  However I've
only found 7-15 volt versions which is not as useful.

I have two 19Bs for power on my layout.  One reads 18.9VAC and the other 19.3VAC.  I rectified the current via a separate circuit for DC operation for a few items I have, and they work out fine.  Of course, for DC it's variable, so I don't measure top voltage.

That's what mine measure.  I agree, in that voltages vary quite a bit.  Then, they ARE quite old...

    Wayne,
Are they labeled 7-15 volts AC on the back plate?  All the other 'big' Flyer transformers I have were also
available as 5-18 volts, but I haven't found a 19B with that labeled output.  Since I am running on DC with
can motors having the low end 5 volts is useful for slow speed running and the rectified DC high voltage is
    still over 15 volts.

I guess I need to measure the output of my 19B, 7-15 volt model.  It's pretty easy to install DC LED gauges
after installing a rectifier and reversing switch and be able to monitor DC voltage and current draw on the
transformer.  I just didn't expect it to have output as high as 19 volts.

    thanks for the info.

Attachment worked fine.  Much easier to understand, especially the variations on the first page.

One question though.   Doesn't the output depend on the input voltage?  I looked at the photos of thegilbertgallery.org and it seems Flyer transformers are rated at a variety of input voltages between 110 and 120, many, like the 17B and 19B at 110-120.   If I recall, when I was growing up in the 50's the line voltage was nominally 110 Volts, but I believe it is running higher today, probably at 120 or close to it.  Maybe the labeled ratings were taken at 110?

You’re right, Dale.  When we were kids the “normal” voltage was around 110 but is now at least 120 in most localities.  Here at our house it is very steady at 124VAC so my measurements of AF transformer secondaries are high compared to the 1950s.  But the ratio of change is constant – so since 120V is about 9% higher than 110V, the outputs should also be 9% higher.  Thus a transformer that really put out 15V with 110V input would have an output of 16.4 V or so at 120V – but the increase actually measured is much higher.  My speculation is that maybe the early production units were not UL listed and when they went to get the UL listing, Gilbert was forced to change the nameplate voltages and reduce the output on some models (190 to 175).  That is pure speculation on my part – would love comments on that.

Line Voltages /Train transformers. Being part electrician I test line voltage in the house if things don't seem right; for example lights seemed dim in one home I had only showed 109 volts and I knew that was a recent issue, called company tech came and  he thanked me for calling, found the feeding line transformer was overloaded.. bigger transformer, problem solved.. otherwise the earlier one would have burned out. Moved to Butte MT noticed lights were super bright [incandescent] and burning out sooner, showed 125 V. tech came said they usually run 122V, high I think.. and his better meter showed it ok at 122V.. I think its kind of high..but..works. Now in Boise Idaho noticed lower voltage, they said they usually run about 118V.. so a lot depends where you're at.. or line conditions at the moment, especially summer.Ed Davis

The yahoo system messed up the formatting of the table – here’s a second try using an attachment.  The first page describes the variations I’ve found and the second page has the voltage table.  If you can’t open the Excel spreadsheet let me know.

I’ve been working on a draft of an article on the turret style transformers so I was really glad to see Jerry’s 19B voltages – they are significantly higher than the voltage I measured on my 19B.  Here’s the chart on what I have measured:

        All,
I've only worked with a handful of the bigger Flyer transformers.
Now I'm wondering if
Flyer tested their transformers and the design/build variables forced Flyer to test the outputs and then
they separated the transformers into one of these two ranges after testing..

If the 19B had a 5-18 voltage range, it would be excellent for conversion to a DC power supply.  However I've
only found 7-15 volt versions which is not as useful..

Out of curiosity I measured the AC output at a wall plug in my house just now and it was 119.6. I remember in the "old days" That voltage was always given as "110". That higher reading may in fact be the reason for the slightly higher readings than what was printed on the transformers.

I checked my house voltage - 115 volts

And I just checked my 16B  4.5 volts Low - 17.8 volts High; Back Plate 5-18 volts
pretty much on target all things considered.

Since I am on a large municipal grid  (population 1 million plus) the voltage may be
different than on a small grid where one large user could affect supplied electrical power.

On a side note - How many people check their water pressure at their homes?  Because of locations
on the sides of a hill my last two houses had excessive pressure (120PSI) requiring the installation of
pressure regulators.  Note: most hoses for washing machines, ice makers, garden hoses are rated at only
60 psi.  In both neighborhoods I observed irrigation system and hose failures.  A neighbors ice maker
hose failed causing major damage as did another's hose failure in an upstairs laundry room.  I didn't
install a regulator on my irrigation system and have to replace sprinklers heads and valves every 4-7 years.
Outdoor leaks aren't quite the disaster as indoor leaks...

          1) Potentials listed on the transformer are just “nominal” values and will vary by some unknown percentage from one unit to another.  After all, we are talking about “toy train transformers” here, NOT precision instruments.

          2) The output potential will always vary with the load.  (This is because the secondary of the transformer has resistance.)  AC Gilbert “should” have specified the current load under which the output potentials were to be specified, but I haven’t seen anyone mention that, and it is not printed on the transformers (at least, not on mine).  (I.E., is an output potential of 15 volts specified with no load, at full power, or at some other specified current.)  Without this specification, the corresponding output potential will vary, and the output voltage marked on the transformer is only a rough estimate of what may actually be present.  NOTE:  If one wants to specify/measure the output potential of a transformer, it probably should be done under its full rated resistive load.

          3)  AC measurements should be made with true RMS reading instruments if the waveform is other than sinusoidal.

          4)  If one is converting the AC output of the transfer to DC, one will see even more variability in the measurements with load, the means of rectification, the type of filter, means of regulation, etc.

          5)  As others have mentioned, the line potential in the US when these transformers were made (circa 1950-1960) was specified at between 110 VAC and 115 VAC (depending on where you lived).  Thereafter it was specified at 117 VAC, and today is it nominally 120 VAC.  So, if one throws a meter on one of these old transformers today, they will read about 8% higher than when they were manufactured.

          6)  If you cannot get a DC operated engine to go slow enough at the lowest “speed” setting on the rectified transformer output, just add a couple of appropriately rated low-cost silicon diodes in series with the track supply (before any reversing switch).  Three diodes will drop the potential by about 2 volts and six will drop it by about 4 volts.

I just didn't expect it to have output as high as 19 volts..

          thanks for the info.

I have two 19Bs for power on my layout.  One reads 18.9VAC and the other 19.3VAC.  I rectified the current via a separate circuit for DC operation for a few items I have, and they work out fine.  Of course, for DC it's variable, so I don't measure top voltage.

That's what mine measure..  I agree, in that voltages vary quite a bit.  Then, they ARE quite old...

          Gents,

I was mistaken on the models of my transformers.  The way I have them on my shelf, the front plate is against the fascia.  My 30B, rated at 18VAC measures 19.3VAC and my 18B also rated at 18VAC measures 19.5VAC.  I measured the line voltage and it came to 122.1VAC, so with the now higher voltage, they're in the ballpark.  That's why I run my Flyer Chief locomotives with the variable post at 18VAC.  Carl, good observation!  BTW, I use a Radio Shack multimeter for measurements.

I have a couple of Northerns with flange chips in the trailing truck large diameter wheelset.

These are not high quality wheelsets but they seem to be a unique (for Flyer) diameter.
I checked a couple of on line sources and either didn't find them or they were listed as out
of stock.  I'm not adamant about OEM wheelsets, if Lionel or NWSL has a suitable wheelset
I am willing to go that route.  Better than waiting for a broken flange derailment.

Thanks Jerry for the updated info..  I also use a Radio Shack multimeter which is advertised to provide true RMS measurements.  It agrees closely with my really good Heathkit lab type multimeter so I think it is ok!

Larry, thank you.  Doug has already contacted me off-line.  The problem is that the wheelset I need measures
0.82" over the flanges and the trailing truck wheelset he listed was 0.9375".  Obviously seems to be a typo.
Also his part number didn't match the Flyer diagram I was using, so I was confused and asked a general question.

I'm not sure why, but Flyer rolling stock doesn't seem to roll as well as  similar weight scale models, so I was
willing to try a non-Flyer substitute.  In reality the trailing truck is wrong for the engine as the UP 4-8-4s had smaller
trailing truck wheels than the Hudson trailing truck used under the Flyer 4-8-4s.  The Hudson rear wheels were 51"
while the UP 4-8-4s had 42" wheels.  The Hudson rear wheel (scale ) should be about 0.80" over the treads so the Flyer
wheel diameter is slightly smaller to compensate for the large flanges.

Thanks for the Figure 2 table and data.  Gilbert AF transformer back plate specs, actual output, and relative performance is something that's fascinated me for a number of years.  Back in the day when deciding which to use on my layout, I bought and tested a number of them, as well as did so on some that friends lent me to try out.  Below is a cut 'n paste from a Word doc table I put together in 2006.  I hope it turns out legible.  Maybe that data will help now as well.  After trying different ones, I ended up using nine transformers - three 30B, one 16B, one 15B, one 12B, one 4B, and two 1-1/2B all assigned to different loop power, lighting, and accessory duties.   Along with three TPC400, two SC-2, one NCE DCC system and Smart Booster, one Scott’s Odds-n-Ends DTK-4Z Surge Protector, and a bank of fast blow fuses.  So far so good.  Only thing I'd change were I to do it over would be to use DCC Specialties PSX-AC's instead of fast blow fuses because now not only are they fast acting, but also resettable.

I hashed together an incomplete 314AW I had an bought a tender needing repainting.. the engine isn'.t.
Its quite nice had a little paint touch up, good lettering etc on engine. A thinking of swapping  the boiler complete with good front and steamchest and pilot  for one that needs repainting and having all the items mentioned, oh yes handrails too.. can be any number 312 up but NOT the early ones since my hardware is for the 1950 plus ones, The guides for rod action are different from the early ones. I don't want to have buy the stuff to swap them out. Would like some compensation for the difference in condition and rarity, come up with an offer if the swap is something you would want. Wish postage weren't so pricey!  Ed Davis, Boise Idaho.

            Subject: Variable transformers

I retired from a large power company in Northern Illinois ( Com Ed ) after 35 plus years in the metering department.

Optimum voltages to our customers was between 117-123 volts which the company strived for. If you check your wall outlets once a day, you will probably find varying voltages from day to day, and perhaps hour to hour. Voltage variances also have a bearing on the distance from your local substation and the season of the year.

Low voltage ( 110v and less ) was/is a big problem with the utility companies. Industrial motors tend to start heating up and drawing more amperage that can lead to overheating. Modern electronics/ computers are very sensitive also.

We supplied the residential house market with 120/240v as I believe every utility in the States does.

Many large apartment buildings are supplied with different type of transformer banks providing 120/208v, but the wall outlets should still be in the 120v range.

110v o220v was outdated through out the country by the 1960s and no longer exists in the States or Canada.

So the Flyer transformers were probably designed in the '40s and '50s for 110v.

I had Steve change two of my hand car motors to cam and i am using one in a trolley and it runs very well. I know not original but I wanted a trolley to operate on the club layout with no problems. And the low hand car frame made it easy to install. Try the second one in a Galloping Goose with some problems with slippage. I think the frame in the goose is causing some binding it the operation. Are you going to the show in Grand Rapids Sat. If so I can bring them along to show you and we can run on the test track

You may have forgotten that hand car doesn't like to run more than a few circuits before getting hot; it's a limited use critter like the Baldwin switcher. You might turn the commutator and check that brushes are good and making good contact. Add a little more spring tension. You've already cleaned and lubed so that's all I've got.

Hello

I've been playing and fixing electrical apparatus, including toy transformers and metal enclosed apparatus for many years.  If feasible, you should always use a grounding , 3-conductor, electrical cord.  Attach the green wire securely to the metal enclosure.  If you have a short or if the live conductor touches the metal enclosure, sufficient current will flow to blow the branch fuse or trip the circuit breaker.  If you are hesitant to re-wire your equipment for a 3-wire cord, be sure to plug in to a GFI outlet or use a GFI in-line type extension cord.

Another thing, don't plug your 3-conductor cord into an extension of the lighting circuit.  Otherwise, you might be left in the dark!

                Regards,

                Hello all!

Although I'm retired, I have maintained my PE license.  During my career as an electrical engineer, I worked with UL Labs all the time.  It was fun to bring them a pre-production product for testing.  They have a requirement for just about anything with and electrical cord made by a company who wants to display the UL seal.

There actually is a specific UL Standard (UL 697) for Toy Transformers.  It is quite comprehensive and lists dozens of requirements which are describe in 697 or covered by other UL standards.  UL 697 did not exist when our little toys were manufactured.   If it did, AC Gilbert would not get a UL approval.  However, neither would Lionel or any other manufacturer of similar  equipment at that time.

These "toy transformers" are not rated like "real" power or control transformers which always have a VA (volt-ampere) rating, and list rated voltage and current.  The watts (real power) rating serves it's purpose because of the high power factor of the typical toy train layout.

The important issue, IMHO, is electrical safety.  Please, re-wire your transformers with 3-conductor cords or plug into a GFI outlet!!!

                Regards,

                Frank

When I purchased a large number of rubber road bed, I saw a challenge in restoring the rubber.
First I soaked and washed it in hot water in my kitchen sink.

When it was all dry, I created a place outside to dry it completely.

Then I sprayed Permatex Silicone Lubricant.

That helped bring the rubber back to life.

The ones that were basically ruined when I got them were still in bad shape after I sprayed them.

This helps bring the back color back but if you want a new look then you will have to paint them.

I like the natural look they have now.

                I love this group.

What a wealth of knowledge you have shared with me.

Or, as with the Baldwin, replace the motor with a can motor.

The bigger Flyer transformers are generally in a Bakelite(?) enclosure mounted on a metal plate.
I was able to get several replacement 3 wire cords of about a dollar apiece.  I was planning on
attaching the ground wire to the metal base.  It seems like a safe precaution to replace the cords
on these 60 year old electrical devices (especially if the insulation is cracking).  Would you attach
                the ground wire somewhere else?

                Hello all!

Although I'm retired, I have maintained my PE license.  During my career as an electrical engineer, I worked with UL Labs all the time..

These "toy transformers" are not rated like "real" power or control transformers which always have a VA (v olt-ampere) rating, and list rated voltage and current.  The watts (real power) rating serves it's purpose because of the high power factor of the typical toy train layout.

The important issue, IMHO, is electrical safety.  Please, re-wire your transformers with 3-conductor cords or plug into a GFI outlet!!!

                Regards,

                Frank

If the rubber men are stiff it will cause the hand car to run slowly and heat up as well. Some people clip the pumper higher up on the rubber men's arms because the hands break off, this is not good for the motor. Also make sure the brushes are even and centered on both sides of the armature.

If the rubber guys are stiff they shouldn't be on the handcar!!!!
That would be a violation of Rule G!!!

                Kenneth,

I will defer to Frank, but I would fasten the ground wire to the frame of the transformer with a screw, star washer and nut, and bond that back to the metal plate at the bottom.  (This assumes there is a suitable hole in the frame to which the ground wire can be fastened.)  Scrape away any varnish around the mounting hole on the transformer and use a crimp-on ring-type terminal on the ends of your ground wires.

The idea is to provide a low resistance path back to ground should any insulation break down and the hot side of the line connects to any conductive part that the operator can touch.
